How Umuryango works, who can do what, and where to find things.
Your family tree
The Family tree page opens on you, or on the youngest generations. Type a name in the search box to find someone: the tree moves to them and highlights them. Click a person to see their details, their relatives and photos without leaving the tree. On a phone, the List view shows the same people grouped by generation.
To see how two people are related, choose Show how two people are related and pick the two names: the path between them is highlighted and explained in plain words.
Ask about relationships
Ask questions in your own words, in English, French or Kinyarwanda, such as "Who are Kenny's cousins?" or "How is Teta related to Liam?". The answers come from your family's description only.
Who can do what
- Members see the tree, ask questions, contribute to the family's plan and edit their own profile.
- Family admins also write and correct the family description (each save is a new version, and old versions are never deleted), add photos, approve people who ask to join, and manage the family's plan and payments.
- The app owner runs the service and sees statistics only: never your tree, photos, questions or family description.
Joining a family
Ask a family admin for the invite code, then choose Join a family on the sign-in page. An admin approves your request; until then you see "Waiting for approval".
Plans and payments
The family's plan is paid once a year with mobile money (MTN MoMo or Airtel Money). Members can help through Contribute. When a plan ends there is a grace period; after it the family becomes read-only: you can still view the tree and photos and ask questions, and nothing is ever deleted.
Your account
Use the menu under your name at the top right for My profile, Change password, this help and the privacy terms. If you forget your password, choose Forgot password? on the sign-in page: a code is sent to your email.
